Britain’s film industry faces existential pressure as former U.S. President Donald TRUMP revives threats of tariffs on foreign productions. The sector, already reeling from streaming disruption, pandemic-era box office declines, and labor unrest, now confronts a potential severing of its financial lifeline—American studio investments accounting for 65% of UK production funding.

Pinewood and Shepperton studios stand particularly exposed. "We scramble when U.S. money arrives," admits director Howard Berry, highlighting the absence of domestic funding mechanisms. The British Film Institute confirms the dependency: nearly two-thirds of 2023’s production capital originated from Hollywood studios and streaming platforms.

Trump’s September social media broadside against "stolen" Hollywood business signals escalating rhetoric. Market analysts note the UK lacks contingency plans for such a trade shock, with Berry conceding: "Without that pipeline, we’re stuck." The threat emerges as global entertainment giants continue shifting resources toward direct-to-consumer streaming—a trend already squeezing traditional production hubs.
